Police are looking for several men whose brazen gun battle injured another man who was taking part in a nearby violence-prevention barbeque.
A 25-year-old man was hit by a stray bullet while protecting his girlfriend and her son. They were attending a Sunday evening gathering at a park on Sidney Belsey Crescent, near Jane Street and Weston Road, when gunfire erupted between men in two cars up the street.
Staff Sergeant Richard McKeown said it was “just kind of a fluke” that the “completely unrelated” gunplay intruded on the anti-violence barbecue.
“It kind of emphasizes their points that we really do have to get these guns off the streets,” he said.
The man, who received a superficial gunshot wound to his back, was expected to be released from hospital on Monday.
Police are examining a cellphone video of the shooting and are looking for footage from surveillance cameras in nearby apartment buildings.
